Composite fillings are made from a white synthetic resin which is commonly used as a restorative material to fill holes left after a cavity has been removed and a tooth has been properly prepared. Composite materials typically require a bonding agent and the use of a curing light to set properly. We typically use composite materials if the treatment shows when you smile.
Composite is a more expensive material to use than amalgam and some insurance carriers do not cover the full cost of composite. We will endeavour to let you know in advance if the materials we recommend are not covered under your plan however, any balance not covered is the patient's responsibility. We do not treat you based on the terms or limitations of your dental plan, we recommend treatment that is in your best interest and the health of your smile.
Some patients have genuine concerns about the use of amalgam as a filling material. It is one of several materials that we use, each one with their own benefits and disadvantages. Although we primarily use composite (white filling material), there are times that patients request amalgam. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know and we will help you make an informed decision.
